Buitencentrum Hessenheem

You’ll find Buitencentrum Hessenheem in Markelo, one of the oldest villages in Twente. This village borders the Salland region and the Achterhoek in Gelderland. Across from the bungalow park are clay tennis courts where you can play a game. There is also the option to play indoor tennis. If you’d like to explore the wooded surroundings by bike, you can hire a bike at the park.

The park’s outdoor swimming pool has a separate children’s pool. Set off on an adventure along the Squirrel Trail at Hessenheem Outdoor Centre. The Squirrel Trail features 10 exciting challenges spread along the route. Move like a squirrel, search for different leaves and jump from shape to shape. Climb and scramble on various play equipment and discover fascinating facts about the animals and insects you encounter along the trail.

For a quick bite to eat, head to the Buuf & Buur snack bar at Buitencentrum Hessenheem. Here you’ll find chips, a variety of snacks, soft-serve ice cream and coffee, amongst other things. This makes it a handy spot to grab a bite to eat after an active day out in the area or to pop in for an ice cream between activities. The snack bar is open all year round, but opening hours vary depending on the season.

Surroundings of Hessenheem Outdoor Centre

The area around the Hessenheem Outdoor Centre offers countless attractions and places of interest. At the Eungs Schöppe Museum Farm, you can view a collection of traditional Twente costumes and bonnets dating from 1820 to 1940. You should also visit the town of Diepenheim, which is known for its castles with beautiful gardens and parks. Warmelo Castle, surrounded by moats and featuring, amongst other things, a Victorian garden, is a prime example of this. The region also offers a range of sporting activities. These include mountain biking, canoeing and go-karting. Walking and cycling are also wonderful pastimes in the area. Discover the De Borkeld nature reserve and the Holterberg, and enjoy the peace and space. For a city break, head to the Hanseatic towns of Deventer and Zutphen.
