For a cultural trip or a day of shopping, visit the nearby town of Alkmaar. Be sure to visit the traditional cheese market here in high season. You can also take the ferry to the Wadden island of Texel from Den Helder. For a family outing, visit Fort Kijkduin, a sea aquarium housed in an old restored fort dating back to the time of Napoleon.
