We would like to share our experience during our stay at Het Vennebos with you. We are not doing this to create a negative atmosphere or simply to criticise in hindsight, but because we feel that what happened is not in keeping with a lovely holiday park such as Het Vennebos. We stayed at the park with four adults and four children. One of our children is our disabled son, for whom we paid the full price, just as we did for the other guests. Due to his condition, he was unable to walk or swim during our stay. This automatically ruled out many activities for him. That is precisely why it was important to us that, wherever possible, he could take part in activities that were accessible to him. One activity he was keen to take part in was the bingo evening. The first time, we spent about an hour trying to secure a table. We asked if anyone could help us, but unfortunately no one responded. As we wanted to give our son a second chance, we arrived well over 2½ hours before the start the next time. We tried again to find a suitable seat, but were unsuccessful. We explained our situation and pointed out that, due to his care needs, we couldn’t arrive any earlier. At that point, our son had only been discharged from hospital for about three weeks, having been kept in a medically induced coma there for over seven weeks. He is visibly in need of assistance and uses a wheelchair. This was therefore not a matter of convenience or a reluctance to wait; there were genuine medical and practical reasons why we could not arrive hours earlier. We were very disappointed by the response from the manager in question. We were told that no exception could be made, because everyone has their own personal circumstances and otherwise there would be no end to it. We understand that an organisation needs rules and that staff cannot simply make an exception for every situation. At the same time, we feel that insufficient consideration was given to finding a reasonable and humane solution. We put forward several solutions ourselves. For instance, we suggested bringing our own table, so that our son could at least be present and, if necessary, take part simply for the sake of it and for fun. This, too, proved impossible due to a staff shortage and because, according to the manager, an extra table would not be organisationally feasible. What we subsequently found difficult to understand was that a solution did in fact emerge whereby we could join other holidaymakers at their table. Chairs, it turned out, were not a problem. In the end, other holidaymakers – whom we didn’t know at all – kindly took pity on our situation and ensured that our son could join in after all. We are grateful to these people. At the same time, we found it distressing that it was ultimately other guests who ensured our son could still have an enjoyable evening, whilst we had asked for help several times beforehand and had even suggested various solutions ourselves. On top of that, the manager then said something along the lines of: “I can see you’ve had a lovely evening, so everything turned out all right in the end.” It was precisely that remark that upset us. Yes, in the end we did have a lovely evening thanks to the willingness of other guests. But that doesn’t mean the problem has gone away. The fact that other holidaymakers sorted it out doesn’t mean that the way we were treated by the park staff was suddenly appropriate. In fact, several people involved in the situation said they also found the whole affair heart-wrenching. What bothers us most is that, in our view, no consideration was given to the purpose behind the rules. This was not a case of a family asking for preferential treatment for themselves. It was about a young boy who was visibly in need of assistance and who, after a very difficult spell in hospital, simply wanted to take part in an activity that was actually achievable for him. We weren’t asking for a major exception. We were looking for a practical solution together. We were even prepared to bring our own table and accept that our son might not actually be able to play, as long as he felt he belonged. Furthermore, we found it difficult to reconcile the explanation that an extra table was not possible due to staffing constraints, yet it subsequently turned out to be possible to allow several people to join an existing table. If the problem really was staffing constraints, we do not fully understand why one solution was possible and the other was not. We regret that, in our view, the manager in question did not show sufficient empathy in this situation and acted primarily by the book, rather than asking: ‘How can we ensure that this boy still has an enjoyable holiday experience?’ We believe this is particularly important for a holiday park of this size and character. A park that caters to families and holiday fun should, in our view, also be accessible and welcoming to people who need a little extra help. For them in particular, a seemingly small activity like a bingo evening can mean the world. Unfortunately, our experience has led us to view Het Vennebos as unwelcoming and not very inclusive in this regard. And to be honest, we think that’s a shame, because the park is beautiful and we would have loved to look back on our stay with a positive feeling. We do not expect every rule to be adapted for every guest. What we do expect, however, is that in special circumstances, staff will be willing to think things through, seek reasonable solutions, and ensure that guests — particularly when it comes to a child with special needs — feel heard and welcome. We therefore hope that you will take our complaint seriously and share with us your views on this situation. Not only for our sake, but also for the sake of future guests who require extra support due to a disability or illness. In our view, such a situation should be handled differently in future – and, above all, in a more humane manner. We look forward to your response with interest.
